Abrams began her political career as a copywriter at the age of 17 when a congressional campaign committee was impressed by her changes while typing for them. Maynard Jackson, Atlanta’s first black mayor, with whom Abrams had a televised 1992 town hall dispute over social justice concerns, established an Office of Youth Services in 1993 and hired her as the office’s lone undergrad college student.

Abrams worked as a tax lawyer at an Atlanta equity business after graduating from Yale Law School. She focused on issues such as tax exemptions, healthcare, and government financing. At the age of 29, Mayor Shirley Franklin nominated Abrams as Atlanta’s deputy city attorney.

Stacey was born in Wisconsin, but her family relocated to Gulfport, Mississippi, when she was a few years old.

She told USA Today in an article that her family had battled to stay over the poverty level at first. She also revealed that there were instances when they didn’t have access to electricity or running water, and they had to make do.

Her mother worked as a librarian at a school, while her father worked in a shipyard. Her family soon moved to Georgia, where her parents were ordained as Methodist ministers.
