Barry Egan despises both himself and his life. Barry, the lone man out of eight siblings, is mistreated by his domineering sisters. He has achieved little in life despite running his own company, partly due to his fears. He is able to conceal his violent outbursts when he is frustrated since he lives alone.

He is able to think, however, and comes up with a plan to explore the world on a meagre budget—something he has never done. He simultaneously encounters two people who push him in opposing ways. The first is Lena Leonard, a close friend of Elizabeth, his sister. Lena makes all the first moves because Barry is slow to recognise his attraction to her.

Barry finally comes out of his shell thanks to Lena, who remains by his side despite his obvious issues. The second, “Georgia,” whom he called to alleviate his loneliness, jeopardises his budding relationship and, as a result, his new life with Lena. No matter what the cost to Barry, Georgia and her “band of brothers” will stop at nothing to acquire what they want from him.

9.YI YI:

The lives of the Jians—husband and wife N.J. and Min-Min, teenage daughter Ting-Ting, and eight-year-old son Yang-Yang—as well as, to a lesser extent, those of their larger group of extended family and friends, are presented. These lives are buttressed by two milestone events in their personal spheres. The Jians reside in a posh Taipei apartment building with Min’s mother, Min’s, who is in a coma.

Min’s family members alternate shifts by her bedside, relaying news to her regardless of whether she can hear it. The other three use Min-Min as an informal sounding board for their concerns, particularly those related to figuring out their place in the present and their contribution to her predicament, even if she struggles with this effort.

Yang-Yang still has a childlike view of the world, which is why he enjoys shooting pictures of people’s heads. Yang-naivete Yang’s is also the reason he is the victim of bullying, particularly from a group of older females and from one of his professors. In the difficult friendship between her closest friend and next-door neighbor, Lili, and her lover, Fatty, Ting-Ting is serving as an unofficial middleman. Given that Ting-Ting has feelings for Fatty, it is even harder. And because N.J., a computer electronics engineer, is thought to be the most trustworthy of him and his companions, he is chosen to speak with the Japanese Mr. Ota and determine whether the pricey investment is worthwhile.

Meanwhile, N.J. reconnects with and gets to know Mr. Ota’s married and now-Chicago-based childhood friend Sherry, who would have been his soul mate had he kept their appointment thirty years earlier. N.J. uses Mr. Ota as a sort of confidant in their developing friendship. A-Di, the younger brother of Min-Min, recently married Xiao-Yan, partly for a very specific reason, while his ex-girlfriend Yunyun sulks on the sidelines. Thirty years from now, he may face the same dilemma.
